Virgil van Dijk claimed Liverpool 's shock loss at Wolves was "down to ourselves" as he labelled their misfiring attack as "slow" and "predictable".

The Reds' Champions League hopes were dealt a blow as they were beaten at Molineux with the Premier League 's bottom side scoring their winner in stoppage time. They had taken the lead prior to that before Mohamed Salah seized on a mistake to equalise.

But Liverpool's frontline struggled to make inroads against a defence that had already shipped 51 goals this season. Since their blistering start to the season the Merseysiders have struggled for form and consistency in their performances.

Van Dijk laid the blame firmly at their own doorstep as he bemoaned the manner of their display, admitting that they could have few complaints with the result.

He said: "I think it's down to ourselves. It was slow, we were predictable, sloppy in possession and wrong decision-making. We didn't concede chances but if you perform like that then a result like this can be a result of that and that's a fact. It was disappointing."

Arne Slot has admitted throughout the season that Liverpool have struggled to make the most of the ball, especially when they play teams who sit deep against them. They found it difficult to get going at Wolves with Van Dijk bemoaning their productivity in possession.

"The game nowadays we over-analyse why things are happening on the pitch," said the Dutchman. "We as a team want to start a game as well as we can and in the last game we did, today we had majority possession but we were still making wrong decisions and we couldn't find the end product."

Liverpool have now lost nine times already this season as the champions face the possibility of missing out on the Champions League despite their summer spend of more than £400million. Van Dijk, like Slot, has continued to reference issues in their game which have hampered them all year.

After the shock loss the Reds boss claimed: "End result, we score one and they score two – and indeed another time in extra time, so it sums up our season again in this game as well."

Liverpool's next assignment sees them return to Wolves, this time in the FA Cup , as they play at Molineux twice in the space of three days.
