Tottenham's players face wage cuts of up to 50 percent if they are relegated due to clauses that were included during Daniel Levy 's tenure.

The former chairman was renowned for being a shrewd operator and put in provisions should the worst ever happen. That was seen as the club protecting themselves for an eventuality that would never occur, but the team's demise has that as a realistic possibility.

Tottenham lost for the fourth game in a row as they were beaten at Fulham on Sunday, leaving them just four points above the bottom three. The Athletic reports that nearly every player in the squad has a relegation pay cut clause in their deal in north London.

Levy made sure to protect the club financially with any club that drops into the Championship seeing huge drops in revenue. That is something Tottenham are now having to consider with the club winless since December 28.

Igor Tudor came in to replace Thomas Frank , who was only appointed in the summer, but the Croatian has lost both of his games and that has increased the possibility of Spurs falling into England’s second tier for the first time since 1977.

Since Levy’s departure, Tottenham have signed two first-team players, one of whom was Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid and the other being Brazilian Sousa from Santos. Gallagher returned to London in January on a contract that made him the highest earner at the club.

Tottenham finished 17th last term under Ange Postecoglou, but the quality of the bottom three meant there was always a notable gulf between the north Londoners and the team in 18th. They finished the season with 38 points - 13 points clear of safety - but their performances left a lot to be desired.

Their struggles have continued into this season despite a promising start and relegation remains a genuine possibility. Tudor didn't shy away from calling out his players for their lack of effort and quality following their latest defeat at Fulham.

"When you are in a bad moment, you put the players, but then you lack defending, running and winning the duels," said the Croatian. "So what to do? That's the big question in the future. To choose what is right for this team. To find a formula, what we want to be, what we can be in this moment."
