The so-called Roberto De Zerbi derby gets under way at 5.30pm on Saturday evening as Tottenham Hotspur welcome Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend. Spurs’ new chapter began in depressingly familiar style last weekend, going down 1-0 at Sunderland, while Brighton maintained their momentum with a 2-0 win away at Burnley.

Tottenham’s first outing under De Zerbi could scarcely have gone worse: defeat, no goal, and another major injury setback. On a grim afternoon at the Stadium of Light, captain Cristian Romero suffered a season-ending knee injury, and Spurs slumped to a 16th league loss of the campaign after Nordi Mukiele’s deflected strike sparked home celebrations.

There were small signs of improvement in the performance, but points remain painfully hard to come by for a side scrapping for survival. Tottenham sit two points below the relegation line with only six matches remaining.

Still without a Premier League win since the start of 2026, Spurs have now gone 14 league games without victory, the fourth-longest winless run to begin a calendar year in Premier League history, and a statistic that has typically ended with relegation for those who fared worse.

A recent 3-2 win at Atletico Madrid offered a rare high, even if it ultimately proved meaningless in the Champions League. Domestically, Tottenham’s home form has been disastrous: just 10 points collected at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2025-26, the worst home record in the division.

Brighton, by contrast, have hit top form. The Seagulls have taken nine points from their last three league matches — only one fewer than Spurs have managed at home all season — with Sunderland, Liverpool and Burnley all beaten in quick succession.

Mats Wieffer was an unlikely hero at Turf Moor last weekend, scoring twice in a comfortable 2-0 win. With additional victories over Brentford and Nottingham Forest in recent months and their only defeat in that spell coming against leaders Arsenal as Brighton have amassed 15 points from their last six Premier League games, the best return in the league over that period.

Ninth in the table and just two points off sixth-placed Chelsea, Brighton now chase a club first: four consecutive Premier League away wins. Each of their last three road victories has also come with a clean sheet. They also have recent history on their side against Spurs, having thrashed Tottenham 4-1 in north London on the final day of 2024-25, before a 2-2 draw in September extended their unbeaten run in the fixture to three matches.

Roberto De Zerbi confirmed on Friday that Cristian Romero will miss the rest of the season with a partial MCL tear, though it should not affect his World Cup prospects.

Romero joins Dejan Kulusevski, Wilson Odobert and James Maddison (all knee), plus Mohammed Kudus (thigh), Ben Davies (ankle) and Guglielmo Vicario (hernia) on the sidelines, but Rodrigo Bentancur is back from a hamstring issue. Kevin Danso is expected to deputise, while Mathys Tel and Xavi Simons are pushing for starts.

Brighton are also without their captain, with Lewis Dunk serving the second game of a two-match ban. Adam Webster and Stefanos Tzimas (both knee) remain out, as does James Milner after a minor training injury, but Pascal Gross has created 24 chances since returning in January — fourth-most in the league in that spell.
