Manchester United were given a firm 'no thanks' after reaching out to Simone Inzaghi about potentially taking over as the club's new permanent head coach in the summer, it has been reported. Al-Hilal boss Inzaghi, had been considered as a possible candidate for United following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim on Monday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is anticipated to step in as interim boss until the summer while United hunt for a full-time successor to Amorim. Inzaghi, along with Oliver Glasner , Roberto De Zerbi and Enzo Maresca, was among those linked with the permanent role at Old Trafford.

However, when United approached ex-Inter Milan manager Inzaghi about accepting the job at the end of the season, he firmly declined, stating his focus is currently on Al-Hilal, as per TuttoSport .

Inzaghi's £43.3million two-year contract is believed to be an 'important reason' behind his refusal. Al-Hilal are currently leading the Saudi Pro League standings, just one point ahead of second-placed Al-Nassr, having won 10 and drawn two of their 12 matches this season.

In all competitions, Al-Hilal have triumphed in their last 17 games, an impressive streak dating back to mid-September when they drew 3-3 against Al-Ahli.

Al-Hilal face Al-Nassr in a crucial top-of-the-table Saudi Pro League showdown next Monday - a match that could prove decisive in the title race, with Al-Taawoun trailing in third place. Simone Inzaghi still has 18 months remaining on the contract he signed with Al-Hilal following his departure from Inter Milan last June.

The 49-year-old guided Inter to the Champions League final at the conclusion of last season before deciding to move to Saudi Arabia. During his tenure at the Milan outfit, which began in July 2021, he recorded 141 victories and 41 draws across 217 matches in charge.

Meanwhile, United take on Burnley in the Premier League on Wednesday in their first fixture since Amorim's exit earlier this week. Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher is expected to take charge as caretaker manager for the trip to Turf Moor, with Jonny Evans serving as his assistant.

Ahead of United's clash with the Clarets, Fletcher said: "Surreal. It is an amazing honour to lead a Manchester United team especially as it was not in my wildest dreams that would be something which could potentially happen.

"To lead out the team is an amazing honour and something I am really proud to do but not in the circumstances I expected it to happy so that is something which doesn't sit quite easy with me.

"But, I have just got to think I have a job to do and I just have to lead the team tomorrow and think of the great honour and pride in doing that."

Fletcher and Evans are also set to lead the team against Brighton in the FA Cup on Sunday, before United gear up to appoint a caretaker manager for the remainder of the season.
