Newcastle’s hopes of silverware were dashed in midweek as they exited the League Cup semi-final, marking their third defeat in four matches across all competitions. Eddie Howe’s side continue to grapple with injuries to key players, with Anthony Gordon the latest casualty after picking up a hamstring injury in the 3-1 loss to Manchester City. The Magpies have managed just one win in their last eight games and have struggled at home recently, losing and failing to score in two of their last three fixtures at St James’ Park.

In contrast, Brentford arrive on Tyneside in excellent form, having won four of their last six matches in league and cup. The Bees have kept four clean sheets in their last seven outings and have been particularly impressive on the road, winning four of their last five away games in all competitions. Brentford’s confidence will be boosted by their recent 1-0 victory over high-flying Aston Villa, and with Brazilian striker Thiago—who has netted 16 Premier League goals this season—they possess a real attacking threat.
