Brighton & Hove Albion head to St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon to face a Newcastle United side searching for a way out of a deep slump. Newcastle’s 1-0 loss at Arsenal last weekend was their fifth straight defeat in all competitions, while Brighton arrive buoyed by a 3-0 win over Chelsea — a result that brought Liam Rosenior’s spell in charge of the Blues to an end .

Eddie Howe's side have been labelled the favourites with the bookies at 7/5 with William Hill which may surprise some given their run of form while Brighton are only slightly behind at 8/5 with BetGoodwin and a draw is best priced with Betfred at 5/2.

The Magpies missed the chance to seal Premier League safety at the Emirates and, with the run-in still to play out, Eddie Howe’s team remain at risk of being dragged into a relegation battle. They could count themselves unfortunate not to take something from Arsenal, but none of Howe’s players could find a moment like Eberechi Eze’s set-piece brilliance from a first-half short-corner routine.

Yoane Wissa’s close-range volley over the bar typified Newcastle’s recent fortunes. They have now lost four Premier League games in a row, sit 14th in the table and are eight points clear of the drop zone. Only already-relegated Burnley and managerless Chelsea can match that four-game losing streak in the top flight. Newcastle are now also in danger of losing five straight league matches for the first time since January 2021 under Steve Bruce.

Brighton, though, were clinical in their last outing. Ferdi Kadioglu, Jack Hinshelwood and Danny Welbeck struck in a 3-0 win over Chelsea on April 21 to keep Fabian Hurzeler’s side in the conversation for a Champions League push.

The Seagulls are sixth, eight points behind Aston Villa and Liverpool with four games to play, but they are also looking over their shoulder with Everton, Bournemouth, Brentford, Chelsea and Fulham all within range. Even so, Brighton have been the Premier League’s in-form side over the last five games, taking 13 points from 15, and they have collected 10 points from their last four away trips, keeping three clean sheets.

October’s 2-1 win for Brighton extended their strong recent record against Newcastle as they are unbeaten in six straight meetings, and Newcastle have beaten the Seagulls only twice since both clubs returned to the Premier League in 2017.

Newcastle had a boost with Bruno Guimaraes getting through 75 minutes after his injury, and Joelinton returns from a one-game ban. Eddie Howe is hopeful Anthony Gordon will be back from a minor groin issue, but Fabian Schar, Tino Livramento and Emil Krafth remain out. After Nick Pope’s shaky outing at Arsenal, Aaron Ramsdale could be recalled.

Brighton are without Adam Webster, Stefanos Tzimas and Diego Gomez (all knee), and James Milner is also expected to miss out. Solly March may return, but is unlikely to start. Mats Wieffer is not believed to be injured after coming off at half-time vs Chelsea and should keep his place.
