Marc Guehi bites back over Liverpool boos as Man City star gets last laugh

Marc Guehi says he’s not sure why he was booed throughout Manchester City’s dramatic win at Liverpool. The England defender was given a brutal welcome by the majority of fans inside Anfield.

Guehi was previously close to a move to Liverpool last summer, only for the centre halve's former club, Crystal Palace , to pull the plug on a deal late in the window. Now with City after they made their move in January , he has been left clueless about the jeers from Reds fans on Sunday.

Speaking after the game, he said: “I’m not sure why to be honest. But I can’t control what their fans think of me. I’m just grateful for our fans for sticking by me and supporting me the whole game.”

Guehi eventually got the last laugh on Merseyside as City secured a dramatic win. Dominik Szoboszlai had given Liverpool the lead with a stunning free-kick, only for late goals from Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland to flip the game on its head.

City then thought they had scored again through Rayan Cherki, only for the strike to be controversially ruled out by VAR, with Szoboszlai sent off for pulling Haaland’s shirt.

Asked for his verdict on City’s win, Guehi added: “Credit to the fans, they came out in numbers and supported us from the beginning right to the end.

“Someone said that’s the first time we’ve won here with fans since 2003. I actually didn’t know that at all.

“I think it’s great for them to see that and experience that. Credit to everyone for showing such resilience in such a tough game. So yeah well done to everyone.”

Asked what contributed to City’s dramatic victory, Guehi replied: “I think that’s the standard when you’re trying to win games especially against tough opposition like Liverpool. That’s the standard, it has to be every single person giving every single bit of their energy for their brother next to them and I think everyone did that today.”

“It’s not easy. The fans are on top of you, you’re playing against a team that likes to press high but it’s always about the next action,” he added.

“You might make a mistake but it’s the next one, you might make another mistake but you focus on your next action and how you can help your teammates in the next moment. So credit to everyone.”

Man City now sit six points behind Arsenal in the race for the Premier League title. Guardiola’s side are back in action in midweek as they welcome Fulham to the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.
