Manchester United are big admirers of Thomas Tuchel and he was expected to be among the Red Devils’ main targets in their search for a permanent head coach in the summer, according to The Times .

However, the Old Trafford club are set to miss out on the German as he is expected to sign a new deal to stay as the England head coach until 2028.

The news could be confirmed before today’s draw for the 2026-27 Nations League and Man United have to strike his name off their list of targets.

The Red Devils approached Tuchel to succeed Erik ten Hag, and he had several meetings with their board in the summer of 2024.

He spoke with Man United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe at the time but ruled himself out of consideration.

Michael Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim until the end of the season and has led the Red Devils to four wins and one draw in five Premier League games in charge.

The former Man United star has impressed and is doing his chances of getting the job permanently plenty of good.

Tuchel has been linked with the job since Amorim was fired as his initial contract expires at the end of the World Cup in July.

However, he is now expected to remain in charge of the Three Lions for the European Championship in 2028 after agreeing to an extension.

It could be good news for Carrick but Man United have other top managers on their radar and he needs to keep impressing going forward.

They return to action on February 23 to take on Everton on Merseyside before hosting Crystal Palace on March 1.

Man United are fourth in the Premier League table after 26 games but have the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool breathing down their necks for the spot.
