Liverpool news: Virgil van Dijk shows true colours to Rio Ngumoha as youngster agrees loan

Liverpool avenged a Premier League loss when beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1 in the FA Cup on Friday. Youngster Rio Ngumoha impressed with an astute performance .

Arne Slot's side eased into the FA Cup quarter-finals at Molineux, scoring three second-half goals after a sedate first 45 minutes on Friday evening. The Reds were beaten 2-1 by Wolves in the Premier League on Tuesday.

Ngumoha, who is only 17, was given the Player of the Match award for his contributions in the cup and captain Virgil van Dijk has paid him some serious compliments. Mirror Football brings you the latest from Anfield, including the departure of an academy goalkeeper.

Liverpool skipper Van Dijk spoke to TNT Sports after the full-time whistle against Wolves and was asked a question about young Ngumoha. The teenager arrived on Merseyside in the summer of 2024 from Chelsea's youth system.

The Dutch defender couldn't speak highly enough of Ngumoha, showing his true character with his comments. He admitted: "Great win.

"I think it was a very disappointing night [on Tuesday], especially a very disappointing last 20 minutes of the game, and we had to make something right here.

"Obviously we all see day in, day out how special [a] talent he [Ngumoha] is in terms of one-v-ones and the pace he drives at players. He's working hard, he's a good boy and we are looking after him.

"We speak to him constantly and he needs to keep learning, keep soaking it all up and take it into his progress. [Friday] was a good day for him. Nothing more, nothing less. He has to keep going."

Away from the first team, the departure of young goalkeeper Fabian Mrozek was confirmed earlier this week, with the shot-stopper uploading a picture to social media in his new colours.

The 22-year-old has joined Major League Soccer's FC Cincinnati on loan for the remainder of the season. The move is initially a loan arrangement with a purchase option included. He will occupy an international roster spot.

Mrozek joined Liverpool's academy in August 2020 from FC Wroclaw. He made 60 appearances across all competitions for the Reds at U18, U19 and U21 levels and has been on the bench for the first team six times.
