Jamie Carragher has slammed Alexis Mac Allister after the Liverpool midfielder was branded "embarrassing" during the clash with Aston Villa . The former Reds defender pulled no punches in his assessment of the Argentinian following an incident with Ezri Konsa moments before Villa's third goal.

Mac Allister was left sprawled on the turf after an off-the-ball clash with the England defender. The 27-year-old appeared to put his hands on the centre-back. Konsa reacted and grabbed him by the shirt, pulling it towards his face before the Liverpool man collapsed to the ground.

The incident was checked and cleared with the Villa defender escaping any punishment from referee Chris Kavanagh.

Play was halted while Mac Allister remained on the deck with head coach Arne Slot seemingly gesturing toward the area in question, urging the Liverpool midfielder to get back on his feet.

Having reviewed the replay, Carragher said: "Oh. Honest to God. Honest to God. He goes down every game Mac Allister with something round his ankle normally not like that.

"It's embarrassing. Just get up. Honestly. It would be embarrassing if they sent Konsa off for that. Mac Allister must know we all look at the replays. We can all see what Konsa has done. He knows he can't get away with it."

From the subsequent corner, Liverpool found themselves two goals adrift after the initial effort from distance was kept out by Giorgi Mamardashvili.

The Georgian shot-stopper made another save from the rebound but Watkins was perfectly positioned to force the ball over the line.

Matters deteriorated further for Liverpool late on when John McGinn curled home into the top corner. The victory for Unai Emery's side secured their Champions League qualification, while the Reds must defeat Brentford on the final day of the campaign and hope Bournemouth fail to close the gap in the dying stages.

Virgil van Dijk pulled one back as he grabbed his second of the evening, but it proved another chastening night for the embattled Liverpool head coach.

Carragher added: "Far too many weak, physically, mentally, players, he's the man that is going to be asked to fix it Arne Slot. This result does nothing for the feeling of supporters about his position now."
