How many points Man Utd need for Champions League after England's fifth-spot boost

Manchester United's hopes of achieving their sole remaining objective this season received a timely boost on Tuesday evening, courtesy of Premier League rivals Arsenal . Kai Havertz's late winner against Sporting in their Champions League quarter-final first leg has ensured English football's top flight will once again have five clubs qualifying automatically for the competition.
England now hold an unassailable lead in UEFA's coefficient rankings , which automatically secures them an additional qualifying spot for the Champions League. Italy and Spain are currently battling it out for the other extra berth. For United, this means Michael Carrick's job has become considerably more straightforward, reports Manchester Evening News .
The former midfielder was brought in to guide United back into the Champions League, and the Red Devils are on the brink of doing exactly that, having taken 23 points from a possible 30 available in his first 10 games in charge.
United are currently in third place, on 55 points from 31 games, seven points clear of Chelsea in sixth. While United will still be keen to finish as high up the table as possible — with third place a realistic ambition — they will secure a top-five finish should they accumulate 70 points.

That's because Chelsea , who currently occupy sixth place, can only reach a maximum of 69 points if they win every one of their remaining fixtures. Realistically, given Liam Rosenior's side's current form, the Red Devils can afford to fall short of that tally — but to be mathematically certain of their place, 70 points is United's magic number.
United have won seven of their 10 games under Carrick in the Premier League and have seven left to play. Five victories from those remaining fixtures would be enough to secure a return to Champions League football. Liverpool, currently in fifth can reach a maximum of 70, meaning five victories would also likely be enough for top four.
United travel to Chelsea on Saturday, April 18 before welcoming fellow Champions League contenders Liverpool on Sunday, May 3. Here's how the Reds' Premier League run-in shapes up against Chelsea's remaining schedule.
