Harry Kane faces competition from England team-mate Declan Rice for this year’s Ballon d’Or.

Another standout night for the pair on Tuesday saw Kane score his 42nd goal of the season as Bayern Munich recorded a huge away win over Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals.

At the same time, Rice was again a step above the rest as Arsenal recorded an away win of their own, against Sporting.

The pair are firmly in contention to be crowned the best player in the world at France Football’s October ceremony, though last year’s runner-up Lamine Yamal will have his say.

Barcelona’s teenage prodigy has enjoyed another remarkable season, and is primed for a key role for Spain at the upcoming World Cup.

Much will also be expected of England captain Kane and midfielder Rice at the summer tournament, along with Real Madrid and France star Kylian Mbappe .

Kane’s Bayern team-mate Michael Olise produced a man-of-the-match display at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday night, prompting his odds to tumble overnight into fifth-favourite.

Six-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo appears to have a job on his hands to win his first trophy since 2020, along with long-time rival Lionel Messi.
