Cuidado, Pavlidis! Ronaldo’s Manchester United replacement ‘to be targeted’ by Benfica
Benfica could move for Wout Weghorst in 2026/27, the striker who replaced Ronaldo at Manchester United, a signing that would put pressure on Pavlidis.
Het Parool reports that Benfica are interested in the 34-year-old Ajax forward, with no clarity over a formal offer, although the club already know the terms of a potential deal.
Weghorst is in his second season at Ajax, his contract ends at the end of the campaign and there is currently no renewal agreement. He would therefore be a free transfer, with costs limited to wages.
The 2025/2026 season is not yet over, but with few objectives left the board led by Rui Costa has already turned to summer planning.
Across his career he has represented Wolfsburg, Hoffenheim, Burnley, Besiktas and Manchester United. For the Netherlands he has 51 caps and 14 goals, including one against Argentina in the 2022 World Cup quarter-final.
This season for Ajax he has made 28 appearances, 23 in the Eredivisie and five in the Champions League, totalling 1,777 minutes, with eight goals and two assists.
