Wolves struck in the 94th minute to inflict Liverpool's most chastening defeat of the season in spectacular fashion on a night Arne Slot and Co will be desperate to forget in a hurry.

Entertainment was in short supply during a drab first half which passed by without any major incidents of note. But, mercifully, the game exploded into life during an enthralling final 15 minutes as both sides found their cutting edge.

Resolute defending from the home side kept Liverpool at bay before Gomes made no mistake in the 78th minute, finishing after Mateus Mane played him in to give Wolves the chance of completing a memorable smash and grab. Unfortunately for Rob Edwards' men, it seemed like Mohamed Salah had rescued Liverpool when he popped up with a goal - his first in the Premier League since November - just five minutes later.

But it turned out to be nothing more than the warm-up act for Andre, whose deflected strike looped over the stranded Alisson in the fourth minute of stoppage time to spark spectacular scenes inside Molineux. Here are Mirror Football 's talking points from the big game...

Liverpool won't need me or anybody else to tell them that this was a golden chance to immediately move back into the Champions League places. But they were unable to beat a Wolves side who have lost 20 of their 29 league games prior to Tuesday evening.

The champions improved, mercifully, after a poor opening 45 minutes but it wasn't enough. And if they are going to finish in the top-four, then they simply cannot afford to fall short in games like this.

While much has been made of Salah's struggles this term, Cody Gakpo has been just as underwhelming from a numbers perspective. His goal in the 5-2 win over West Ham at the weekend was his first since the start of January and he, like Salah, was ineffective at Molineux.

With Salah in his pomp and Luis Diaz first-choice on the left prong of Liverpool's front three, the duo amassed a staggering 67 goal contributions between them in the Premier League as the Reds blitzed their way to Premier League glory. The drop-off in that area this year is significant - albeit with the caveat that there are still games to go - with Gakpo and Salah having just the 19 between them (20 with Salah's late strike here).

But it's not just goal contributions - they have failed to affect games in the same way Liverpool's wide men did last year, which will be a major concern for Slot and Co - even if Salah did find the net in the league for the first time since the start of November.

Wolves may not be playing in the Premier League next season, but the classy Joao Gomes underlined why it looks a safe bet that he will. Sharing the pitch with Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, Gomes didn't look out of place and was central to everything Wolves did during an encouraging period in the first half, digging in when required.

If recent reports are to be believed, Gomes is to have no shortage of suitors in the summer transfer window. And for any top Premier League clubs looking to refresh their engine room, Gomes should be at the top of the list.

Even the most optimistic of Wolves fans would probably admit there will be no great escape for Rob Edwards' side considering they started the evening with half the points of Nottingham Forest , the team just outside the relegation zone.

But they have, at least, shown fight in recent weeks as they face up to their fate. They were full of running and excellent defensively here, albeit largely non-existent as an attacking threat until their late goals.

It's now back-to-back wins for Wolves, who are finally showing signs of life. The only disappointment is that this new-found steel almost certainly comes too late to save them.

For 80 minutes of Tuesday night's game, there was little to shout about for either team, though Wolves will be happy with their defensive efforts.

But Gomes' goal suddenly jolted thingd into life; Salah struck minutes later to set up a frenetic finale, plundering his first Premier League goal since November. And then came Andre's grandstand finish, which prompted his manager unleash his finest Jose Mourinho impression halfway down the touchline.

It was a very welcome finale that the game certainly didn't warrant it. Liverpool will have to lick their wounds. And while Wolves will all but certainly have to take their medicine in the form of relegation in the coming weeks, memories of this night will outlive that pain.
