Why are Liverpool fans protesting before Fulham game today?

Frustrated Reds supporters will make their feelings clear at Anfield this weekend

A wounded Liverpool resume their Premier League campaign at home to Fulham on Saturday.

It has been another difficult few weeks in a thoroughly testing season so far for the Reds, who were extremely fortunate only to lose by two goals against Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League quarter-final first-leg clash in midweek.

Liverpool were absolutely dominated by the holders in a one-sided contest at the Parc des Princes, indebted to PSG’s profligacy and some fine saves from Giorgi Mamardashvili to stay in the tie as they managed only 26 per cent possession and failed to register a single shot on target across the 90 minutes.

Such an abject display and a third successive defeat across all competitions appeared to pile plenty more pressure on under-fire manager Arne Slot, with many fans demanding his dismissal less than a year after lifting the Premier League title but the latest reports suggesting that owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) expect the Dutchman to remain in charge next season as things stand.

He will surely abandon his back-five experiment against Fulham as Mohamed Salah pushes for a quick return to the starting XI having been left on the bench in Paris, with Liverpool desperate to kick-start their stalling bid for a top-five finish having been edged out by Brighton before the recent international break and then demolished by Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, with their chances of winning any silverware this term now appearing extremely remote ahead of PSG’s return visit to Anfield on Tuesday.

Fulham currently sit four places and five points behind their opponents in ninth, bidding to qualify for Europe themselves after fighting back to beat relegation-bound Burnley 3-1 at Craven Cottage last time out.

Marco Silva will be in the away dugout, with his one-match touchline ban from the Football Association (FA) for comments made after the 1-0 defeat by West Ham last month paused pending the outcome of an appeal.

Saturday’s game will be played out amid a backdrop of protests from angry Liverpool supporters over planned ticket price increases at Anfield.

The club announced in March that they would be increasing general admission ticket prices limited to inflation for the next three seasons.

The decision has been met with a furious backlash from several fan groups, with supporters’ union Spirit of Shankly quickly revealing plans to protest during the remainder of the campaign - starting this weekend.

The protests are set to occur both inside and outside Anfield and will not be limited to one match, with plans to carry them out across both home and away fixtures.

Spirit of Shankly have urged fans not to spend money inside the ground where possible and also said that they support suggestions of delaying season-ticket renewals until close to the deadline, which is midnight on Monday, May 25.

As part of those protests, fan group Spion Kop 1906 - who organise flags and banner displays on The Kop - confirmed on Thursday that their flags would no longer be present at Anfield for the remainder of the season.

The exception will be for the PSG game, which is the closest match to the anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, when the group said they would pay their respects as always.
