Two Brentford stars were 'left bloodied' after helping a man who was the target of an alleged racist assault in the early hours of Sunday morning in London.

The alleged assault took place at around 2am in Richmond, only miles from Brentford's home base. The unnamed Brentford players helped calm the situation before the police arrived, but both were left with injuries, according to witnesses.

The Telegraph reports that the two players were travelling back from Leeds , where Brentford had claimed a goalless draw at Elland Road. It was the last match before the international break, with the west Londoners allowing their players to make their own travel arrangements.

Neither of the players involved in halting the alleged assault were left with serious injuries and both were thought to be healthy come Sunday.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “Police attended a report of an assault on Queen’s Road, Richmond at around 02:00hrs on Sunday, 22 March. Officers engaged with the victim. The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made at this time.”

Brentford's draw in Yorkshire, coupled with losses for some of the teams around them, keeps them firmly in the European picture. On Friday night Manchester United drew at Bournemouth whilst both Chelsea and Liverpool were beaten on the road on Saturday.

It means that the Bees, who lost their two top scorers and their manager in the summer, are sitting in seventh place after defying all expectations this term. Despite being among the favourites for relegation pre-season under their new head coach, Keith Andrews, they are only three points off fifth spot, which would likely be good enough for a place in next season's Champions League .

Andrews said after their draw at Leeds: “I think it’s fair to say we were stretched coming into the game following a disrupted week. The players, I have to say, were absolutely amazing in how they dealt with the change of what we planned and how we went about things. A clean sheet was huge and how we defended the box was sensational.

“In the last five or 10 minutes, regardless of what happened, all I would have been saying to the players at the end of the game would’ve been about the pride I feel every time I see them play, the staff included.”
