Manchester United could end up paying almost £16million with their decision to sack Ruben Amorim . The Portuguese coach exited Old Trafford in January following a miserable spell at the club.

The former Sporting Lisbon boss led the Red Devils to their worst-ever Premier League finish, as well as defeat in the Europa League final. The club’s miserable form continued this season, with club chiefs electing to sack Amorim last month.

A statement at the time read: “Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United . Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.

“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.

“The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.”

And it has now been revealed exactly how much United had to pay to cancel the remainder of his contract. As per the latest club accounts, the Premier League side have already paid an immediate £6.3million in writing off his amortisation of contract, while Amorim and his staff could be due a payout worth around £15.9m.

The accounts read: "On 5 January 2026, the Club announced that Ruben Amorim left his role as men’s first team head coach with immediate effect, along with a number of members of his coaching team.

“A charge of £6.3 million for the write off of related intangible assets and a provision of £15.9 million, representing the maximum potential amount of future settlement payments, will be recognised in the statement of profit or (loss) during the second half of the year ending 30 June 2026."

United had originally agreed to pay Sporting Lisbon £10m in compensation to recruit Amorim, who signed a three-and-a-half year deal to replace former boss Erik ten Hag . The Portuguese is yet to officially speak out on his sacking.

In the meantime, United have turned to former midfielder Michael Carrick , who has enjoyed an impressive spell in charge. He has won five out of his six opening games and has the side sitting fourth ahead of this weekend’s clash with Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.
