Marie-Louise Eta's historic debut-as the first woman to coach in professional soccer-ends in defeat

M arie-Louise Eta's name has been making headlines around the world all week since Union Berlin announced her appointment. However, Wolfsburg put a damper on things (0-2) in her debut as the first female head coach to lead a team in one of Europe's top five leagues.

Excitement was at its peak, and a roar shook the picturesque An der Alten Försterei stadium when Marie-Louise Eta emerged from the locker room entrance. Every camera lens in the stadium was trained on her... and no wonder, since they were witnessing a historic moment.

Compared to the starting lineup fielded by his predecessor, Steffen Baumgart, he did make quite a few changes to face a struggling Wolfsburg side that hadn't won a Bundesliga match in over three months. He shuffled the fullback positions, bringing in veteran Trimmel and Rothe, paired Kemlein with Rani Khedira in midfield, and started Ansah a few yards further up the field.

It was a more attacking approach that, nevertheless, led to Wolfsburg's 1-0 lead just over 10 minutes into the match. Patrick Wimmer picked up the ball in midfield, drove toward the edge of the box, and unleashed a first-time shot with the outside of his foot that flew straight into the top corner, leaving Ronnow with no chance.

The truth is that Union Berlin didn't react badly either. Grabara made a fine save against Ansah, and immediately afterward, Doekhi connected with a header at the far post that sailed over the crossbar. However, they couldn't build on that momentum, and right after returning from halftime, Pejcinovic's goal from outside the box following a high interception by Eriksen came as a real blow to An der Alten Försterei.

Just as with Wimmer's opening goal, Union Berlin bounced back well and even hit the woodwork with a powerful header by Andrej Ilic, who, with five minutes remaining, sent Oliver Burke through on a run to face Grabara one-on-one.

They pressed until the end in search of the equalizer. But they couldn't prevent Marie-Louise Eta's historic debut from ending in a loss that, while not enough to knock Wolfsburg out of the relegation zone, does leave Union Berlin in a precarious position, sitting six points above the relegation spot with four matches remaining.
