Manchester United manager Michael Carrick is set to give Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw additional time to show they are fit for the clash against Newcastle United on Wednesday, after both were had to withdraw during the victory over Crystal Palace due to illness.

Shaw was substituted halfway through the first half, replaced by Noussiar Mazraoui, while Maguire exited during the second half and was replaced by Ayden Heaven. Neither defender sustained an injury, with Carrick confirming both were unwell.

United 's interim boss is now optimistic they will recover sufficiently to retain their spots in the starting line-up against Newcastle at St James' Park, with both included in the squad that travelled to Tyneside on Tuesday afternoon.

"We're hoping so. We're working toward it," Carrick told the Manchester Evening News when questioned if Shaw and Maguire would be fit. "They weren't feeling too good, so we've still got a bit of time to the game and we'll just have to see how they feel. We'll obviously give them every chance."

"It wasn't an injury. Both of them weren't feeling too good. It's one of them things really, but we'll just have to see how they are today and tomorrow morning."

United might be missing Lisandro Martinez and Mason Mount at Newcastle, with neither yet back in full training. Martinez has been absent for the last two matches with a calf problem, while Mount has missed five games due to an injury he sustained in training.

Matthijs de Ligt hasn't featured for United since the end of November as he continues to manage a back issue. As for Newcastle, meanwhile, they may well have to deal with a number of absences for the clash with striker Nick Woltemade potentially missing out.

"Nick has come down ill," Magpies boss Eddie Howe said. "There's potentially an illness in the squad. He hasn't trained but we will give him every chance for tomorrow.

"Jacob trained fine yesterday. Tino Livramento is getting closer and closer. This game possibly comes too soon for him but we are desperate for him to become available."
