Newcastle are adamant that transfer interest in Sandro Tonali will not descend into a major saga and want any prospective deal for the Arsenal and Manchester United target done early in the summer.

The Italy midfielder, 25, has emerged as a transfer target for some of Newcastle 's domestic rivals after enjoying a fine campaign. And just months after surprise links to Arsenal materialised on the final day of the winter transfer window, talk that Tonali could depart St James' Park for another Premier League club has gathered pace.

The Gunners, United and Manchester City have all been credited with an interest in Tonali, who is valued at close to £100million by Newcastle.

However, a new report from The i Paper claims that interest in the playmaker's services will have to be registered with the Magpies early in the summer, with an exit only likely to be sanctioned if a deal is done on Newcastle's terms.

And that will also involve Tonali's suitors agreeing to meet Newcastle's financial demands, meaning any deal for the former AC Milan star is likely to be one of the biggest of the summer.

Newcastle are preparing to overhaul their own squad in the transfer window, with earlier sales giving them a greater idea of how much they can spend in relation to squad cost ratio (SCR) rules.

The Magpies were hampered by speculation over Alexander Isak's future last summer, with interest from Liverpool running until the final hours of the window. Eventually the striker was sold for £125m, with the club keen to avoid a repeat with Tonali and their other star players this year with the likes of Tino Livramento, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon all attracting serious interest.

Manchester United are gearing up for a seismic summer with plans to overhaul their midfield and two new signings in that area are possible with Casemiro already confirmed to be moving on.

The Red Devils, who will also appoint a new permanent head coach before the 2026-27 campaign, have already been linked with a number of different names and have reaped the benefits of doing business domestically last year with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha impressing as part of a new-look attack.

Arsenal are also expected to be active in the summer window, though outgoings will also be necessary after they spent £250m last year in a bid to equip Mikel Arteta with all the tools required to end a 20-plus year wait for a domestic title.
