Man City look for payback after Newcastle United's rare Premier League victory

Manchester City round off Saturday’s Premier League action by welcoming Newcastle United to the Etihad, following a rare victory by the Magpies the last time the teams played.

The two teams clash in the late 8pm fixture, Man City more rested than Newcastle, who travelled more than 2,500 miles to Azerbaijan to face off against Qarabağ FK in the Champions League in midweek.

Far from throwing in the towel in the title race, City are asking questions of Arsenal and have now closed the lead at the top to four points. Pep Guardiola will have been delighted to see the Gunners stumble to a 1-1 draw with Brentford in the Premier League after City claimed three points in dramatic fashion at Anfield.

Newcastle, on the other hand, have been struggling in the top flight this season under the leadership of Eddie Howe, and now find themselves in tenth place.

A particular worry for Newcastle will be Man City's dominance in the League Cup. On February 4, City sealed the tie with a dominant 3-1 display, claiming the semi-final tie 5-1 on aggregate.

However, Newcastle have enjoyed two more positive results since then. After paying a visit to an ailing Tottenham and claiming a 2-1 victory, the Magpies came back in dramatic fashion to land a victory against Aston Villa in the FA Cup last Saturday.

The head-to-head form is unlikely to fill Newcastle with much joy. Manchester City have dominated the recent head-to-head record between the two, winning seven of their last ten encounters across all competitions. Newcastle has managed two wins in this period, including a narrow 2-1 Premier League victory at St James' Park in November 2025.
