Liverpool will look to tap into the spirit of their 2018-19 comeback specialists when they host PSG at a deafening Anfield on Tuesday night, with a place in the Champions League semi-finals on the line. Arne Slot’s side head into the second leg 2-0 down after last week’s trip to Paris, a result that left the Reds with work to do but not without hope. In truth, the damage could have been far worse, yet Liverpool remain firmly in the tie.

Slot raised eyebrows in the first leg by opting for a defence-first system that left no role for the outgoing Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian could only watch as Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia fired PSG to a 2-0 win, though the holders were not able to completely capitalise on Liverpool’s conservative approach.

Liverpool registered their lowest ever attacking threat under Slot with just 0.17 expected goals at the Parc des Princes and on another night might have shipped three or four. Even so, a two-goal deficit is not beyond them, especially on home turf. Anfield proved decisive in Liverpool’s unforgettable 4-0 turnaround against Barcelona seven years ago, and Slot’s men arrive with a timely boost after ending a three-match losing streak by beating Fulham 2-0 in the Premier League on Saturday.

That win was Liverpool’s fourth in their last five games at Anfield, a spell in which they have stayed unbeaten and scored 15 goals, offering a glimpse of what a dramatic recovery could look like.

PSG, meanwhile, have benefited from a clear run into the return leg. They were scheduled to play Lens in Ligue 1 around their meetings with Liverpool, but the match was postponed after the club’s request was approved, despite objections from Lens.

With extra rest secured, Luis Enrique’s side head to Merseyside in strong form. Their first-leg victory was their fifth in a row, and while they have not been quite as dominant as in 2024-25, a league-and-Europe double is still within reach as the season reaches its decisive stretch.

They have also been formidable away from home, winning their last four on the road, keeping clean sheets in three of those, and scoring in every away match since the start of the year.

Enrique also guided PSG to a 1-0 win at Anfield in last season’s last-16 second leg before his side progressed on penalties — and this time, even a repeat narrow defeat would still be enough to send the French champions through to a semi-final against either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich.

Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Fulham on Saturday came with a knock, as Curtis Jones was forced off at half-time with a groin problem. However, the midfielder trained on Monday in a surprise boost and could still be in contention.

Arne Slot is still without Alisson Becker (issue not specified), Wataru Endo (ankle), Giovanni Leoni (ACL) and Conor Bradley (knee), but otherwise is expected to have the same group available as he did at the weekend. That Fulham match also saw Rio Ngumoha make history as Liverpool’s youngest Premier League scorer at Anfield, with the 17-year-old breaking Raheem Sterling’s record — and his performance may have done enough to put him firmly in the frame for a start in the second leg.

PSG, by contrast, emerged from their 2-0 first-leg victory with no fresh injury concerns and, after being given the weekend off, Luis Enrique has been able to prepare with a rested squad.

The French champions have also been strengthened by the return of Bradley Barcola, who is back in the travelling party after recovering from the ankle injury he suffered against Chelsea last month. Fabian Ruiz remains sidelined with a knee problem, while Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Nuno Mendes both risk suspension for the first leg of any potential semi-final if they are booked at Anfield.
