Liverpool are NOT thinking about sacking Arne Slot , having vowed to give him time to turn around the club’s rotten fortunes. The Dutchman led the Reds to the Premier League crown during his debut campaign after replacing Jurgen Klopp .

But Liverpool have failed to hit those heights this term, faling in both domestic cup competitions, while they also sit fifth in the Premier League with seven games of the season left.

Their final chance of silverware is also hanging by a thread, having lost 2-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League quarter-final first leg . But it appears that Anfield chiefs are not considering cutting Slot adrift quite yet.

According to The Telegraph , they believe that the former PSV boss ‘deserves’ to lead Liverpool into next season, while they ideally want to give him four transfer windows before making a decision over his future - Slot having only been in charge for three.

Liverpool are also acutely aware of the difficulty that they would have in replacing him. Former midfielder Xabi Alonso was previously a target but turned the Merseysiders down in favour of staying with Bayer Leverkusen ahead of a move to Real Madrid .

Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has already offered his verdict and believes that Slot could be moved on should Liverpool miss out on a spot in the Champions League for next season.

Speaking last month, he said: "If he [Slot] won the FA Cup , but didn't finish in Champions League positions it wouldn't make any difference at all. I think Liverpool have got to get in the Champions League with the [financial] fair play rule.

"The more you get into the Champions League, the better quality player you can bring in. I think they need to get a centre half and they'll be right back up there again next year.

"They've just been off it this year, it's been weird really, and it is hard when you've won the league like they have. They've been in a fight the last two or three years as well, new players come in.

"Again, they're playing for Liverpool, one of the biggest clubs in the world . It's taken them time to handle it, and they're top-quality players, but the club's just a huge football club. He will have to get in the top four, I would have thought, otherwise he might be [the next] Tottenham manager.”

Fortunately for Liverpool, they have more chance of qualifying for the Champions League, with the Premier League currently set to have five spots in the competition next season.
