“It’s all I know” Darren Fletcher speaks from the heart on his love for United

Manchester United Under-18s boss Darren Fletcher has opened up on his special connection with the club in an emotional admission.

Fletcher enjoyed a glittering and trophy-laden playing career at United, having joined the club as a 12-year-old.

The former midfielder was an important player under the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson, coming through the ranks and going on to help the team win five Premier League titles. Fletcher was also part of the squad that beat Chelsea to secure the Champions League trophy in 2008.

After calling time on his playing days, he returned to the club in a coaching capacity, which he holds to this day.

Following Ruben Amorim’s sacking earlier this season, Fletcher temporarily held the position of interim boss until Michael Carrick’s appointment until the end of the season.

Fletcher is doing well with the Under-18s. They sit second in the league table, just three points below Manchester City. United also booked their spot in the FA Youth Cup final after beating Crystal Palace in the semis last week.

But before that, Fletcher and his young charges have a date with Palace again, in the Under-18 Premier League Cup showdown at Selhurst Park this evening.

Ahead of the fixture, the 42-year-old spoke to club media and got emotional as he revealed what United means to him.

Fletcher said, “It’s crazy because, actually, I was having this conversation last night. We were talking about my little nephew, because he’s turning 12.”

“I said that’s when I went to Manchester for the first time on my own, with a scout, an amazing scout. I got the train down with Andy Perry, God rest his soul, he’s passed away now. He brought me down at the age of 12. Then I moved down here permanently at 15, on my own as well, to go to digs in Sale. Cecil Avenue, right next to Ashton-on-Mersey, the school I went to.”

“It’s all I know. Obviously, I’ve been at other clubs, but Manchester United has made me, formed me, developed me. It’s been a massive part of my life and a privilege.”

“A privilege and an honour to be part of the biggest club in the world, for me, without doubt, and one of the most special clubs in the world. It definitely feels like a family. It’s something I’ve got great passion in and doing my best for.”

He added, “Ultimately, we want to do the best for Manchester United , the club and the individuals who work there. The young players and the staff, making sure we’re all helping each other.”

“We’ve got each other’s backs and are striving for the same thing, which is making Manchester United successful.”

Fletcher made 342 appearances for United.
