INEOS now harbouring ‘serious concerns’ over £57m Man Utd favourite who’s approaching the end of his contract

Manchester United chiefs are said to harbour ‘serious concerns’ over Lisandro Martinez’s physicality as he sees out the end of yet another injury-ridden campaign, according to Football Insider .

In the three-and-a-half years he’s represented United, the centre-half has never been able to stay fit for an entire season.

Of his most notable setbacks, Martinez has had to navigate a metatarsal fracture and a cruciate ligament tear, the latter of which is what made him have a delayed start to 2025/2026.

Indeed, the Argentine made his first appearance of the current term at the end of November and featured 14 times before injuring his calf in training and missing a further five games.

While it’s undoubtedly a torrid situation for all involved, it is awfully tricky for United, given how influential Martinez is when he’s available to start.

Martinez’s record in all competitions

He has maintained his status as a first-choice at the back since he made the switch from Ajax in 2022, when he joined in a £56.7 million deal and put pen to paper on a five-year contract, plus the option of an additional 12 months.

It’s thought the club would activate the option the closer Martinez gets to the end of his agreement. From there, however, it remains to be seen if he would be offered fresh terms.

Currently, the 28-year-old has one match left of his suspension for violent conduct , meaning he is poised to return to the team for next Saturday’s clash at the Stadium of Light.

Martinez will also simultaneously have his sights set on playing a key role for his nation, who are the reigning champions, at the forthcoming World Cup.

United chiefs, meanwhile, would be watching on anxiously from home in hopes he manages to avoid any lengthy layoffs throughout the tournament.
