Everton pulled off a thrilling 3-2 victory away at Newcastle United on Saturday, while Burnley were heartbreakingly denied a historic comeback against Brentford.

David Moyes’s side twice took the lead at St James’ Park through Jarrad Branthwaite and Beto, only to be pegged back by goals from Jacob Ramsey and Jacob Murphy. Ultimately, Thierno Barry’s scrappy late finish sealed the win for Everton. The Toffees also had Jordan Pickford to thank, as the England goalkeeper made a sensational save to tip Sandro Tonali’s powerful volley onto the bar—a moment worthy of his celebratory bicep flex.

Ending a two-game losing streak in spectacular fashion, Everton now sit eighth in the table and remain within reach of the European places. However, their home form at the Hill Dickinson Stadium leaves much to be desired, with five defeats and two draws in their last seven matches there. In contrast, they’ve collected 14 points from their last six away games.

While Everton’s match was eventful, it was overshadowed by the chaos at Turf Moor, where Burnley experienced a rollercoaster of emotions in a frenetic contest against Brentford. After falling 3-0 behind, Burnley fought back to 3-3, then led 4-3, only to find themselves trailing 4-3 and then drawing 4-4, with a marginal offside and a lengthy handball check denying them a famous win on two occasions.

Despite the disappointment, Scott Parker praised his players’ spirit and determination, but effort alone hasn’t translated into points for Burnley, who remain 19th in the table regardless of midweek results. To compound their woes, a resurgent Wolverhampton Wanderers are now just six points behind and could soon overtake the struggling Clarets, who have conceded at least twice in six of their last seven matches in all competitions.

Burnley are still searching for their first Premier League away clean sheet of the season, though December’s goalless draw with Everton did at least halt a three-game losing run against the Toffees.

Everton are expected to field the same squad that stunned Newcastle in their previous match, with the group further strengthened by the return of backup goalkeeper Mark Travers following a finger injury. However, Jack Grealish is sidelined for the rest of the season after undergoing foot surgery, and Carlos Alcaraz is set to miss three to four weeks due to a recent training injury.

After both scoring on Saturday, manager Moyes faces a decision between starting Beto or Barry up front, with Barry potentially getting the nod given the short turnaround between games.

Burnley, meanwhile, emerged from their heartbreaking defeat to Brentford without any new injury concerns. Lyle Foster made a second-half appearance after recovering from illness, and both he and Lesley Ugochukwu—who replaced Jacob Bruun Larsen and Josh Laurent at halftime—are now candidates to start at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. However, Josh Cullen (knee), Connor Roberts (calf), Zeki Amdouni (knee), Axel Tuanzebe (calf), Armando Broja (ankle), Jordan Beyer (hamstring), and Mike Tresor (ankle) all remain unavailable for the newly-promoted side.
