Sam Allardyce has laid into Alan Shearer after the Newcastle legend suggested that he 'doesn't see' Eddie Howe still being in charge of the Magpies next season.

The former Bournemouth manager has won plenty of plaudits for the fine job he has done since taking over at St James' Park back in November 2021 and even guided the club to their first domestic trophy for 70 years a little over 12 months ago. But scrutiny is growing on Howe as a result of a chastening campaign which has seen Newcastle lose 15 Premier League matches, with a bottom half finish on the cards.

After watching Howe speak following Newcastle's loss away at his former club on Saturday, Shearer questioned the 48-year-old's position .

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast , Shearer said: "As tough as it is for Eddie, I don't know what is going to happen with him. I listened to his interview afterwards [following the Bournemouth defeat], I watched him on the touchline, I just think, is he going to want to go again? Is he going to get a chance to go again?

"If all things are equal then I would like him to stay, but does he feel he is going to have the chance? Does he want to do it again? Are Newcastle United going to have to sell?"

While speculation over Howe's future has been rife with Newcastle falling well below expectations this season, Shearer's comments have not gone down well with Allardyce, who believes the Toon Army legend was bang out of line.

"He's totally out of order," Allardyce blasted on the latest edition of Footy Accumulators No Tippy Tappy Football podcast. "He's just doing it for his own popularity again with Newcastle fans; he should know better than to do that.

"Mind you, he's a pundit, and he needs to keep his reputation up, and you need to criticise if you're a pundit, don't you?"

"Eddie probably knows (that the end of the road) is coming," the former Newcastle and Sunderland boss continued. "We all have our life span. Sir Bobby Robson was one of the best, but even he got stick.

"We all get stick if we don't do well no matter who we are and we all get moved on."
